Shanshui City: Exploring
Sustainable Urban Development in China
WHERE: The Performance Hall,
USU Campus

Professor Hu will speak
on the dynamic changes in land planning and design in China. His talk will
focus on the adoption and impacts of sustainable practices in China’s rapidly
expanding urban fabric. Several of his masterpieces will be featured, including
the Beijing Olympic Forest Park (home of Beijing 2008 Olympics). Professor Hu
is vice-president of the Beijing Tsinghua Tongheng Urban Planning &
Design Institute, Director of the Research Center for Landscape Architecture,
and council member of Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture.

Media veterans Jeremiah Stettler (social
media manager for Social5), Keriann Strickland (senior editor of
iwantherjob.com), Angela Brown (SLUG magazine) and Patricia Quijano Dark,
(Deseret Connect's Spanish-language products) will offer their insights,
concerns, warnings and prognostications as local newspapers begin to go out
of business. The 2013–14 Tanner Talks, a series of cross-disciplinary events
focusing on the theme "Knowledge and Community," are a presentation
of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Judge Sam Alba was a U.S. Magistrate Judge
for the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah, the first Latino
federal judge in Utah. He did his undergrad here at Utah State. He will
probably talk about his career, his upbringing and how he got to where he is
now.

Come join us for the annual George S. Eccles
Memorial Lecture in Economics at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business. Dr.
Vernon L. Smith will speak on understanding recessions since 1929, focusing
on the relationship between housing-mortgage markets and market volatility.
Dr. Smith was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2002 for his
groundbreaking work in experimental economics.

Foodways, Lecture by Tiffany Tung
WHERE: Museum of Anthropology
TIME: 6:00PM
Dr. Tiffiny Tung is an associate professor of
anthropology at Vanderbilt University. She is an anthropological
bioarchaeologist who studies mummies and skeletons from archaeology sites. In
this lecture Dr. Tung explores the biocultural effects of the process of
imperial collapse and the effects of a subsequent severe drought in the
ancient Peruvian Andes.

an English major? This year’s Alumni Career Panel will focus on how an
English degree can lead to a career in law. The alumni panel will be made up
